ForMexicana,the1990skeptbringingchanges.TheMexicanairlineindustrywasderegulated,whichallowednewcomPEtitorstoform.Seekingtoremaincompetitiveandmodern,theairlineincorporatedEuropean-builtAirbusA320sin1991andDutchFokkerF100sin1992.In1993areorganizedAeroMéxicotookoverasthecompanystruggledfinanCIAlly.Duringthemid-1990s,theMexicaneconomywashard-hitbythedEVAluationoftheMexicanpesoandMexicana,AeroMexico,anDTheIRRegionalaffiliateswerenationalizedwhentheirparentcompany,CINTRA(CorporaCIOnInternaCIOnaldeAviacion),wastakenoverbythegovernment.TheairlinesremainEDIntheirmergedstateuntil2005.Asin1967,anewmanagementteamwashired,thistimeheadedbyPResidentandCEO,FernandoFlores.Thecompanywasreorganizedandrationalized,withanewemphasISPlacedoninternationaLSErvice.UnprofitablerouteswerecutandtheDC-10swereretired.TheairlineventureddeepintoSouthAmericabyaddingflightstoLima,Peru,SantiagodeChile,anDBUenosAires,ArgentinaaNDFurtherintoNorthAmerica,addingflightstoMontreal,Canada.Tooperatethesenewandlongerroutes,theairlineLEAsedBoeing757s,amedium-sizedjetthatISMoremodernandsmallerthantheDC-10andbettersuitedtotheairline'sneedsatthetime.AnotheraspeCTOfthisreorganizationinvolvedthECReationofalliances.Itwaspartoftheregionalalliances,LatinPassandAlasdeAmerica,andlaterformedanalliancewithUnitedAirlines.ThislatteralliancebroughtMexicanaintothenetworkofglobalalliances,asiteventuallyledtheairlineintotheStarAlliance.RecognizingtheusefulnessandimportanceoftheInternet,theairlinelaunchedawebsitemeanttopromoteitsserviceandeventuallyincludedareservationcenter,allowingpotentialpassengersanotheroptionforpurchasingtickets.

Inthe2000s,Mexicanahascontinuedtogrow.Itcelebratedits80thanniversaryinJuly,2001,justbeforetheterroristattacksofSepteMBer11sentworldwideaviationintoatailspin.Nevertheless,theairlinecontinuestoevolve.ItoffICIallyjoinedtheStarAlliancein2000amidmuchfanfare,onlytoexitinMarch,2004.CurrentCEO,EmilioRomano,hasstatedintheairline'sinflightmagazine,VUELO,thattheairlineleFTTHealliancetopursuemoreeffectivecode-sharingrelationshipswithotherairlines.Simultaneously,theairlinecreatedanalliancewithAmericanAirlinesandseveraloneworldAlliancEPArtnerleadingsometospeculatewhethertheairlinewilljointhatalliance.Nevertheless,ithasmaintainedtiestosomeofitsformerStarAlliancepartners,suchasLufthansa.In2003,theairlineretiredtheBoeing727afteroperatingthetypeforalmost40years.TheseaircraftwerereplacedwithnewerA320,A319,andA318types.Thus,theairline,onceanimportanTBOeingCompanyoperator,isnowanimportantAirbusIndustryairline,althoughitstilloperatessomeBoeingtypes.Notably,theairline'slonghauloperationsarepartlyconductedbyBoeing757sandBoeing767s,thelattertypeintroducedinDeCEMber2003,althoughfleetrenewalplansmayseelonghauloperationstakenoverbyAirbustypesandtheBoeing757sarebeingphasedoutofthefleet.

From1995to2005,MexicanawasmergedwithAeroMéxicoaSAPartofCINTRA.Despitegovernmentannouncementsindicatingthattheairlinesweregoingtobeprivatized,thATMovedidnoTOCcuruntilNovember29,2005,whenCINTRAsoldMexicanaanditssubsidiary,CliCKMexicana,totheMexicanhotelchainGrupoPosaDASforUSD$165.5million.Theroadtoprivatizationwaslongandwinding.Thegovernmentreverseditscourseonseveraloccasions.Attimes,itproposedtosellMexicanaandAeroMéxicoseparately;othertimes,itproposedtosellthemtogethertoincreasetheBIdprice.Italsoproposedtosellthecompaniesmerged,butseparatefromtheirregionalaffiliatestoincreasecompetition.Severalcompaniesexpressedinterestinpurchasingoneorbothoftheairlines.Forexample,IberiaAirlinesofSpainannouncedithadplanstobuypartofbothMexicanaandAeroméxico.HowevERMexicana'sownersrejectedtheoffERPossiblybecauseanotherIberia-ownedLatin-Americanairline,ViasaofVenezuela,hadgonebankruptunderIberia'sownership.Further,AerolíneasArgentinashadpreviouslyrejectedasimilarofferbyIberia.

2005wasanimportantyearforMexicaNAViationasseverallowcostcarrierswereestablishedinMexicotocompetewithAeroMéxicoandMexicana.Foritspart,Mexicanarebrandeditsregionalsubsidiary,AeroCaribe,as"CliCKMexicana"andpromotesitasalowcostcarrier.ThISIspartofthecompany'splantoremaincompetitiveastheaviationindustrychangesandcompetitionintensifies.Anothercomponentofthisplanincludesincreasingitsinternationlpresence.OnJuly12,2006,MexicanaannouncedthatitintendstoopennewroutestotheUnitedStatestoSeattle,Ontario,DetROIt,CharlOTTe,anDPUertoRico;itisalsonegotiatingwithArKAnsasofficialstoserveLittleRock.Ofgreaterinterest,perhAPS,theairlinEISstudyingthepossibilityofopeningflightstotoShanghai,Chinain2007.Shouldtheairlineundertakethischallenge,itwouldmarkanimportantACHievementinits85yearhistory.

TheairlineiswhollyownedbyGrupoPosadasandithas7,867employees(atJune2007).
