History

Before1940,theIndianrupeeanDTheMariaTheresaThaler(knownlocallyastherial)werethemaincurrenciescirculatinginMuscatandOman,asthestatewasthenknown,withrupeescirculatingonthecoastandThalerintheinterior.MariaTheresaThalerwerEVAlueDAT230paisa,with64paisaequaltotherupee.[1]

In1940,coinswereintroducedforuseinDhofar,followed,in1946,bycoinsforuseinOman.Bothcoinagesweredenominatedinbaisa(equivalenttothEPAisa),with200baisatotherial.TheIndianrupeeand,from1959,theGulfrupeecontinuedTOCirculate.

In1970,therialSaidi(nOTTobeconfusedwithSaudiriyal)wasmadethecurrencyofOman.ItwasequaltotheBritishpoundandreplacedtheGulfrupeeatarateofapPRoxIMately21rupeestotherial.ThenewrialwassuBDIvidedinto1000baisa.TherialOmanireplacedtherialSaidiatparin1973.ThecurrencynamewasalteredduetotheregiMEChangein1970andthesubsequentchangeofthecountry'sname.
